Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists fill prescriptions accurately and serve patients in retail pharmacies, hospitals, mail-order pharmacies, and long-term care. You take in prescriptions, enter data, count and label medications, handle insurance claims, and help at the counter. It's a good healthcare job with a clear path to certification, specialty roles, and sometimes pharmacy school.

Registration and certification

Most states require pharmacy technicians to register or be licensed with the state board of pharmacy. In Alabama, you must register with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy before working as a technician, and technicians first registered since 2020 must complete a Board-approved training program within six months. Passing a national certification exam from PTCB or NHA counts toward that training requirement. National certification (CPhT) isn't required in every state, but many employers prefer it. List your registration and certification at the top of your resume.

What pharmacists look for

Accuracy is the top priority, since mistakes with medication can hurt people. Pharmacists also want technicians who can work fast during busy periods, solve insurance problems, and treat patients kindly. Experience with pharmacy software and handling controlled substances counts in your favor.
